Did you know that Charlie Chaplin once won third place in a look-a-like contest?  This well known actor of the 20th century had a tragic childhood.  His father died of alcohol abuse when he was just 12 years old and his mother was committed to an insane asylum because of periods of insanity.  As a result, he had to work at a young age to provide for himself.

  • Charlie Chaplin portrayed Adolf Hitler in the successful film, The Great Dictator.  This was ironic, due to the fact that Chaplin was born four days before Hitler, on April 16th, 1889.
  • Chaplin was the first actor to grace the covers of Time Magazine and was married a total of four times. He had 11 children in total.
  • After Chaplin's death in 1977, his body was dug up and the grave robbers tried to exhort 600,000 Swiss francs from his family.  His body was recovered eleven weeks later and the grave robbers were captured.
  • Charlie Chaplin was once viewed to be a communist; therefore, his imprints were permanently removed from the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
  • Although Chaplin lived in the United States for 42 years, he refused to become a U.S.citizen; as a result, he was exiled from the country, and he lived out the rest of his years in Vevey, Switzerland. He died there in his sleep at the age of 88.
  • Charlie Chaplin's full name was Charles Spencer Chaplin.
  • Charlie Chaplin was officially knighted by Queen Elizabeth II when he was 85 years old!
  • Charlie Chaplin was quite the gifted musician; he played the cello and violin well.
  • The famous bowler hat that Charlie Chaplin wore and the cane that he carried were sold at auction for $150,000!
  • Although many people had believed that Charlie Chaplin had brown eyes, he actually had blue eyes.

  • Charlie Chaplin and his family had enjoyed spending their vacation in the village of Waterville, Ireland, in the 1960's.  The Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival was started there in 2011, where there were large crowds of people dressed as Charlie Chaplin.
  • Charlie Chaplin's former home was converted into a museum called Chaplin's World.  This massive museum lies close to Lake Geneva in Switzerland and contains wax figures of Chaplin, as well as a studio playing his famous films, and even a restaurant named after one of his films, The Tramp.
  • Charlie Chaplin had made his first stage appearance at the age of 5.
  • The only color film that Charlie Chaplin had ever made was a 1967 film titled, A Countess from Hong Kong; this film was by far considered his best movie.  This movie also starred Marlon Brando and Sophia Loren.

Sesame Street was almost called 123 Avenue B!

Did you know that Sesame Street was almost called 123 Avenue B?  Producers could not use 123 Avenue B, since this was a real New York City street, so the famous Sesame Street name took its place. Sesame Street was able to broadcast on November 10, 1969 on the PBS channel, due to a series of grants totalling eight million dollars.  At first the actors and puppets acted separately, but producers had noticed this and had everyone interacting together.  As a result, there was a lot of positive feedback from families across the world. Mickey Mouse is known as Topolino in Italy!

Did you know that Mickey Mouse is known as Topolino in Italy? He also goes by Mikki Hirri in Finland, Mikki Mausu in Japan, and Michel Souris in France! Mickey Mouse was originally going to be called Mortimer Mouse, but Walt Disney's wife, Lillian, had insisted on the name, Mickey.  The official switch from Mortimer to Mickey took place on November 18, 1928. Mickey Rooney, famous American actor who starred in more than 300 films, felt that Walt Disney had named Mickey Mouse after him, since he had met Disney in the 1920's as a boy.
